My ITP Journey

Since September, 2012

My Imaginary Friend

I used to have many imaginary friends in my childhood and i named them after various precious gemstones. But as I grew up, they faded away gradually. So I made this simple 30s animation just to in memory of my special friends who supported and accompanied me for a long time :)

My little bouncing ball

A very rewarding exercise from my advanced animation studio class. The assignment is to create a 8-sec long animation to tell a story about a bouncing ball.
It took me totally 7 hrs to work on the keyframes of this naughty rubber ball, but during the process, I really got a chance to better understand the 12 basic principles of animation.

Here is the story board:

The Big Bang!

The Big Bang started out as a drawing machine that would create a unique image of a galaxy based on the sound input from a participant. While we where creating the machine it became clear that the machine itself was a sculpture. During the first presentation the machine was easily as interesting to participants as the image created, thus it became a sculpture.

The Big Bang is initiated by sound input from a participant. They sing a song and a microphone send’s the sound to Max/Jitter. From Max/Jitter data is sent to two Arduinos that change the color & pattern of four LED light strips and the speed of the motor. The light strips are fixed to propeller like arms that are mounted to a motor driven lazy susan. As the lazy Susan spins, a long exposure photograph is taken of the spinning light’s and projected in an IPAD. The project is being advanced to have the photographs either printed out on the spot or uploaded to a Tumbler sight so the participant can take a copy home.

The project was created for the Pcom midterm and is being improved for the final. We are improving and adding another level of audio control for the LED’s, fabricating a more reliable circuit system by using 3 Xbees for the wireless communication to send data and spin the lazy susan, creating the print generation, and creating a wall mounting for the sculpture.

The Big Bang is a chance for people to create there own universe and take a piece of it home with them. It serves to remind us that we can all create something beautiful and unique.

We are all master’s of our Universe.

Imagination

Recently I was fascinated by the randomness that Processing can bring into image creation.  As a photographer, I have been trained to observe the physical environment by it’s lines and shapes, lights and shadows, and heavily rely on my imagination to reconstruct them out of chaos.

It’s quite a delightful experience to explore how coding can emulate my brain process and creates something random yet subtle from the darkness. The traer.physics library has been used here to generate particles in the sketch.

Demo video:

The music in the sketch is Una Mattina, from movie Intouchables.
